Optimism and Opportunity - Transformations Through Specialty Coffee:
Los Guayacanes, a 3-hectare coffee farm, is nestled in the Andes mountains near Buesaco, in the Narino region of western Colombia. The area, close to the Ecuador border, is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, which includes remote canyons, waterfalls, and steep terrain. The region's remoteness and climate once made it a hub for illegal drug production and related armed conflict. However, over two decades ago, the Colombian government reclaimed the area, and with the arrival of peace, many farmers, including Marco Fidel Lopez, shifted to coffee cultivation.
Marco Fidel operates Los Guayacanes with his wife and two daughters. His two sons, who received parcels of land from their father, also run their own coffee farms. Despite experiencing decades of violence and the loss of a son, Marco Fidel has persevered and found success in coffee farming. While his family also grows corn and anise, coffee has become his passion. Marco Fidel is dedicated to enhancing the quality and flavor of his coffee at his family's wet mill, which he shares with his sons. Despite past hardships, he remains optimistic about the future due to the opportunities provided by specialty coffee.
Marco Fidel's coffee is distinguished by his unique cherry processing method. His technique involves a dry ferment period both before and after depulping, followed by thorough washing and drying on patios. This process adds deep fruit notes to the coffee's already bright and flavorful regional profile. The Ruby sourcing team found this lot to be jammy and bursting with berry notes. We are excited to share this colorful Colombian microlot from Marco Fidel Lopez.
