The Ndaroini Factory was established in 1984,and is owned by smallholder coffee growers in the Gatundu subregion. Its 685 active members cultivate over 300 acres of land, managing 170,150 coffee trees. The factory is situated on the foothills of Mount Kenya, benefiting from nutrient-rich red volcanic soil and water from the mountain’s snow-capped peaks.

The region's climate is relatively cool, with moderate rainfall, making it ideal for coffee growing. Ndaroini farms have two harvest seasons: a late crop from October to January, contributing 70% of production, and an early crop from March to June, accounting for 30%. Farmers deliver their coffee to the washing station on the same day to prevent mold growth. The coffee cherries are processed immediately, and the parchment is carefully dried and conditioned before heading to the mill.

Water for pulping is sourced from the Ruvai-Thanga River and recycled to conserve resources. Farmers receive training on agronomic practices through field visits organized by supervisory committees, who also collaborate with the Coffee Research Foundation to provide certified seedlings. These committees encourage planting shade trees and avoiding harmful intercropping to boost production, and they maintain a demonstration plot for farmer education.

Accessing Gatundu involves a two-hour drive from Nairobi after a flight. Farms are close to the washing station, and most farmers transport their coffee by motorbike, though trucks are sometimes hired for collection. The area is rich in wildlife, including species like deer, hawks, and owls, with indigenous plants like Neem trees thriving. However, the region faces challenges, as many young people migrate to cities for better opportunities, leaving aging parents to manage the farms. Some still hope coffee farming will offer future prospects for the younger generation.
