In the northeastern corner of Kirinyaga County lies Kamwangi Coffee Factory, located near the buffer zone surrounding Mount Kenya National Park. The towering presence of the snow capped Mount Kenya plays a fundamental role in the coffee production and lives of those who live in Kirinyaga, which translates to “White Mountain.” Glacial runoff feeds the rivers, cooling the surrounding areas, making temperatures much more tolerable than other coffee growing regions in Africa. A long chain of mountains in the region creates a diversity of altitudes and terrain for coffee cultivation.

Despite the mountain range, most farms are only about a 30 minute walk to Kamwangi. Before coffee is brought to the washing station, farmers hand sort their harvest to remove unripe and overripe cherries. Once it arrives, the coffee is de-pulped and fermented for 24-36 hours, then washed and graded by density. The water used for this process comes from the nearby Nyamindi river. Coffee is then dried on tables in the sun for anywhere from 12 to 20 days depending on the climate.

Coffee is the main economic pillar in this community, though other common crops include banana and maize. Most farms are just 1-2 hectares in size and are surrounded by forests of native trees. Plants such as Grevillea, macadamia, and false banana trees are planted to provide additional shade for coffee plants and farmers strategically use fences to protect their crops and minimize contact with elephants and buffalo. While adults work on farms, children attend school. However, due to lack of opportunity much of the young population is leaving the area in search of a better living.

We’re excited to offer coffee from the Kamwangi washing station for the very first time, and hope to continue to offer it on our menu for years to come. It’s delicate, sweet, and tangy with tasting notes uniquely including Rhubarb!

12 oz / 340 g. Whole bean.
